Accelerated Orthokeratology (AOK), or corneal refractive therapy, is a sophisticated treatment utilizing special oxygen permeable contact lens retainers to gently reshape your cornea while you sleep to temporarily reduce nearsightedness (myopia). The retainer lenses are removed upon awakening. The result is you benefit from clear, natural vision without glasses or contact lenses during the day.

Studies indicate that wearing gas permeable lenses, such as those used in Ortho-K, may reduce the progression of myopia (nearsightedness).

Ortho-K is an excellent alternative to wearing glasses, traditional contact lenses, or even laser eye surgery in some cases. You can be free from contact lenses and eyeglasses during the waking hours. This treatment is ideal for sports enthusiasts, swimmers, or those who work in dusty or dirty environments where day-time contact lens wear may not be appropriate. Ortho-K also offers relief from problems sometimes associated with full time contact lens wear, such as dryness and irritation.

Dr. So has received special training and certification, and has the necessary diagnostic equipment, computer software and expertise to perform Ortho-K treatment.

Ortho-K works best on mild to moderate amounts of nearsightedness or astigmatism. The majority of patients achieve excellent vision in only a few days. More severe cases can have their vision improved, but may still need additional vision correction during the day. The speed of treatment varies with each patient due to unmeasurable physiologic factors of the cornea.

There are no age barriers for Ortho-K; it is safe for children and adults. Ortho-K is an excellent vision correction modality for children who are just first becoming nearsighted as studies have shown that Ortho-K may slow down nearsightedness progression. Moreover, children are very active and can benefit from the freedom of not having to wear glasses or contacts during the day so they can enjoy their activities unencumbered with glasses (which can break) and without fear of having a contact lens "pop out". Parents also enjoy the piece of mind that there is parental supervision during the time the child is wearing the lenses at night.

While Ortho-K success rates are very high, success cannot be guaranteed. Factors such as eye health, expectations, degree of refractive error (how high your prescription is), occupation, and lifestyle all contribute to your candidacy for this procedure.

Some of the advantages of Accelerated Ortho-K treatment are:

  • Patients of all ages can benefit.
  • Potential for myopia control.
  • Reversible.
  • Non-Surgical.
  • Natural vision for recreation, sports, and leisure.
