Accelerated Orthokeratology (AOK), or corneal refractive therapy, is a sophisticated treatment utilizing special oxygen permeable contact lens retainers to gently reshape your cornea while you sleep to temporarily reduce nearsightedness (myopia). The retainer lenses are removed upon awakening. The result is you benefit from clear, natural vision without glasses or contact lenses during the day.

Studies indicate that wearing gas permeable lenses, such as those used in Ortho-K, may reduce the progression of myopia (nearsightedness).

Ortho-K works best on mild to moderate amounts of nearsightedness or astigmatism. The majority of patients achieve excellent vision in only a few days. More severe cases can have their vision improved, but may still need additional vision correction during the day. The speed of treatment varies with each patient due to unmeasurable physiologic factors of the cornea.

There are no age barriers for Ortho-K; it is safe for children and adults. Ortho-K is an excellent vision correction modality for children who are just first becoming nearsighted as studies have shown that Ortho-K may slow down nearsightedness progression. Moreover, children are very active and can benefit from the freedom of not having to wear glasses or contacts during the day so they can enjoy their activities unencumbered with glasses (which can break) and without fear of having a contact lens "pop out".
